Consistent
vs. morning call of 49 (flat to mixed, with a slight downside lean — a fragile tech bounce against a hawkish jobs print; the Dow likely lags)
The morning call played out almost verbatim: the Nasdaq bounced +1.45% on the chip rebound, the S&P finished modestly green (+0.56%), and the Dow lagged, closing red (−0.27%). A split tape, a modest net gain, and the exact leadership the rating described. Direction-correct.
What drove the day
- The chip bounce held — barely. After Thursday's 12.25% semiconductor rout, AMD jumped 11.48% and Nvidia 3.61%, leading the Nasdaq +1.45% and pulling the S&P +0.56%. Earnings beats that mattered helped: Airbnb rose 12.03%.
- A jobs blowout that didn't sink the tape. October payrolls printed +165,000 vs +65,000 expected, unemployment fell to 4.1%, and December hike odds rose to about 75–78% — yet buyers stepped in anyway, the opposite of Thursday's panic.
- But the bounce faded from its highs. The S&P was up 0.9% early and closed +0.56%; the Dow never got green. Cramer's morning warning — "too early to trust this rebound" — held up through the close.
- Yields calmed down. The 10-year spiked to about 4.88% right after the jobs report, then drifted back to close at 4.86%, only +2 bp on the day. The VIX eased to 24.73, still well above its long-run average near 20.
- What comes next. October CPI arrives Tuesday, November 10 — the next big inflation test — followed by the December 8–9 FOMC meeting. The week ended mixed: the S&P and Dow both down on the week, the Nasdaq eking out a small weekly gain.
